Ayuntamiento de Antigua Councillor, Debbie Edgington, will be holding the next Citizen's Participation Meeting in the Caleta de Fuste Cultural Centre on Thursday 5 October 2017 at 6pm, and it will be conducted in English.

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend as I will be working, so if anyone can go, then it would be appreciated.

Yes, we went!   So sorry for the delay in the report.   I got carried away in doing other stuff and completely forgot!  Anyway, better late than never, so here it is!

Citizens’ Participation Meeting
Thursday 5th October 2017

1. British Consulate Visit, Brexit

Tim Hemmings, Consulate for Andalucia and Canary Islands, will be conducting a meeting to discuss what is currently known about Brexit and how it may effect expats. This is being held in the salon at Hotel San Jorge on 17th October, starting at 6.30pm. Spread the word!

2 & 3. Budgets & Public Works Projects

The council are still waiting to receive a four million Euro refund for previous works. This delay is drastically delaying all projects they have in the pipeline. Debbie has been assured that it will be received in the next few weeks. As soon as that is received her department should receive their funding. However, she went on to say that there may be delays until next year.

Once funds are received, the next phase of work is to be the main walkway up to Monte Castillo. However, there are further complications as the land has not been signed over to the council yet. Whilst that may be signed over next week, it appears that green zones have been built on, so presumably that has to be sorted out. There are also similar problems towards the top of the hill.

4. Bin Collection & Recycling

A question arose about the condition of areas in the town, and who was responsible for cleaning. Debbie reported that the new company has still not taken over, and said that she has received a lot of emails complaining about the situation. She explained that the problem in the town was due to the fact that the seats and other areas were not included in the current contract, and therefore were simply not cleaned. These duties and areas will be included in the contract with the new company. There should be 4 machines for cleaning in and around Caleta, however, there is currently only 1 machine working here in Caleta, while the other 3 are apparently being used in Gran Canaria!

Debbie stated that it is the regional council (Cabildo) who are responsible for the glass, plastic and cardboard recycling bins, and whilst they have been repeatedly told about them it seems to fall on deaf ears.

She informed us that Correlejo have an excellent underground system that works extremely well. However, we don’t have the funds for such a project, and it would of course be a massive upheaval.

5. Oktoberfest 2017

This is being organised by local businesses, with Debbie’s help, and will be held on 6th, 7th and 8th October.

On the 13th, 14th & 15th the fiesta in honour of the Lady of the Sea (La Pena del Mar) will be held.

6. Questions & Queries

The state of the road to the sports centre at Beach Villas was raised, and also the graffiti in and around the centre. This will come under next years budget, which is unfortunately going to be less than this years, but it is on the list to do. There are apparently big plans for expanding the Sports Centre, including a swimming pool, but it’s unknown when that will happen at this time. The council do keep painting over the graffiti, but that’s all they can do. There are not the resources to watch the area to try and catch them.

The ongoing saga with the scooters still continues. The Mayor is asking for more police patrols to help with the situation. Currently the scooters are ONLY allowed to be ridden on cycle ways, and are supposed to be walked in all other areas. However, the rental companies do not appear to be informing people of this. There are a lot of talks going on, and ¾ of the council committee want a complete ban. They are looking to implement an immediate fine and scooter impounded on those caught riding off of cycle paths.

The manning of the tourist information booth is contracted out and the contract has just ended. The booth is now closed due to lack of budget.

The matter was raised concerning the white tiles on the walkway along the beach near the Barcelo, stating that they were very slippery. This was due to the gardens being watered and the water overlapping on to the walkway, making them slippery.

Debbie reported that the next project was a new walkway all round the beach. However, they were still waiting to hear what’s happening about the beach. Apparently the attitude of the Coastal department responsible was shocking. She was informed of a meeting about it just 20 minutes before the meeting started. The council are not allowed to do anything about the beach themselves. The beach is “affectionally” known as ‘Playa de Gato’ because it is like cat litter! Hotels are also putting pressure on the council to get it sorted.

Debbie believes that the ‘sand’ came from the harbour because they wanted to make it deeper for the bigger ships.

Debbie was appalled to find out that the architect who did the beach, has now been awarded the contract to do the walkway by the Cabildo! Unfortunately, they have no say in the matter.

There will be a New Years Eve party organised similar to last year.

Noche Blano in Antigua was mentioned as possibly being on the 28th. Debbie advised us to see their website and FaceBook about it, but as yet there isn’t any mention of it.

Next meeting will be held on Thursday 14th December.

Can, in Corralejo the waste disposal system is in underground bins so that nothing is on the surface.

Yes Can, Steve is correct.  All their bins in Correlejo are underground and apparently it works very well.  But even if there was the money to do it here the upheaval would be tremendous.

Those who are here for the next meeting - perhaps we could go for a drink afterwards?

It was also stated that there is an embargo on hiring more staff. Particularly hurtful to Works division as they are the ones who set up everything for the fiestas etc. all over the Municpality at the expense of doing regular maintenance like grass cutting.
